Ovulatory Dysfunction

Ovulatory dysfunction — when ovulation doesn't happen regularly or at all — is one of the most common, and most treatable, causes of female infertility. Understanding it is an important first step.

What Is Ovulatory Dysfunction?

Ovulation is the monthly release of an egg from the ovary. When this process is disrupted — whether happening infrequently, unpredictably, or not at all — it becomes much harder to conceive, because there is no egg available to be fertilised.

The most common cause is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition that affects a significant number of women. Other causes include thyroid conditions, elevated prolactin levels, and disruptions to the body's hormonal balance from other sources.

Signs That May Point to Ovulatory Dysfunction

Irregular, infrequent, or absent periods are the most recognisable signs. Very heavy or very light periods, or periods that are highly unpredictable in their timing, can also suggest the cycle isn't working as expected.

Some women with ovulatory dysfunction have periods that appear regular but are not accompanied by ovulation — which is why tracking cycles alone isn't a reliable substitute for a medical evaluation.

When to Seek Help

If your periods are irregular and you're trying to conceive, it's worth seeking an evaluation rather than waiting. A simple blood test taken at specific points in your cycle can confirm whether ovulation is occurring.

If you've noticed irregular cycles even when you're not yet thinking about pregnancy, speaking to a specialist is a good idea — both for fertility awareness and for your general health.
