Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition that affects many women, often for years before being diagnosed. Understanding it — what it is, how it feels, and how it may relate to fertility — can help you seek the right support sooner.
What Is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in other parts of the body — most commonly around the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic lining. This tissue responds to hormonal cycles the same way the uterine lining does, which can cause inflammation and pain.
It's more common than many people realise, affecting an estimated one in ten women of reproductive age. It can range from mild to more significant in its effects, and the severity of symptoms doesn't always reflect the extent of the condition.
Common Signs
Painful periods — often more severe than typical menstrual discomfort — are the most commonly reported symptom. Pain during or after intimacy, pelvic pain outside of periods, and discomfort associated with bowel or bladder function are also frequently reported.
Some women have endometriosis with no symptoms at all and only discover it during a fertility evaluation. Others experience significant pain. Both experiences are valid, and neither should be dismissed.
How Endometriosis May Affect Fertility
Endometriosis can affect fertility in different ways depending on where it's located and how extensive it is. It may affect egg quality, fallopian tube function, or the environment within the pelvis in ways that make conception more challenging.
Having endometriosis does not mean you cannot conceive. Many women with the condition do so naturally or with relatively straightforward assistance. A proper evaluation helps understand the picture and what steps make sense for you.
